Vocal Therapy and Psychological Voice Disorders

As a fully qualified CBT therapist and vocal coach, I specialise in voice disorders related to performance anxiety and stress. I have a deep understanding of the struggles that happen when the voice suddenly stops working with no known reason - the stress and anxiety-related to vocal issues, and the wondering ‘who am I without my voice?’

How can CBT help with your voice?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be highly effective in supporting voice health by addressing the psychological factors that impact vocal well-being. It helps reduce anxiety and stress, which can cause muscle tension in the voice box and lead to hoarseness or fatigue, by teaching relaxation techniques and coping strategies. CBT also works to reframe negative thoughts about speaking and the voice, boosting confidence and reducing fear. For those experiencing performance anxiety, it provides tools to manage nerves and speak more comfortably. Additionally, CBT supports the development of healthier vocal habits and routines, promoting overall vocal health and well-being.

Voice disorders and Stress

Voice disorders such as vocal fatigue, muscle tension dysphonia, or aphonia can occur when psychological or emotional stress causes changes in voice quality or loss of voice, without physical causes. Often linked to anxiety and stress, these conditions can be managed through Voice Therapy. Stress and tension in the voice box can lead to a rough, hoarse, or gravelly voice by causing excessive muscle tension, affecting vocal cords, breathing, and overall voice quality. Such tension may also cause sensations like a lump in the throat or difficulty swallowing, common in singers, actors, presenters, teachers, and anyone who relies heavily on their voice.
